Yoga is a holistic non-religious system which helps to restore and maintain harmony physically, mentally and spiritually. Yoga incorporates the use of asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), self-awareness, meditation, mantra (sound), mudras (gestures which enhance energy flow and awareness), bandhas (muscular locks), yantra (visual form) and philosophy.
The aim is to first have a healthy body with clarity of mind. The asana, pranayama and self-awareness (when practised regularly) can help you to achieve this.
Yoga can help you to manage stress, anxiety, lack of confidence, and low self-esteem.
Physically, yoga can help you towards improved posture, suppleness, strength and flexibility. It can help improve sleep quality and motivate you to take better care of yourself.
With regular practise, your breathing will improve, leading to greater vitality and mental clarity. Meditative techniques will help you to become more focused, relaxed and in tune with yourself. At Anne Widdup Hypnotherapy, I teach a ‘breath-led’ yoga that encourages ‘mindfulness’ that incorporates not just the specific yoga practice time, but yoga in everyday living. In this way, one is able to sustain a balance in all things whilst living ethically, positively and mindfully. Yoga is suitable for everyone. There are no age restrictions and ability is not important, just a willingness to take the first step on the exciting journey that yoga can present to you.
